My Musical Culture

Hey everyone! My name is Alyssa Graf.  I am a freshman here and I play on the volleyball team! I intend to double major in Biochemistry and Psychology. I am personally not that great with music or any type of art. I did play the flute for a few years, but ended up quitting when things got too busy. Although, music is a huge part of my life! For example, my sister is a music therapist for a program in Illinois that helps underprivileged children and teens. I am technically from a suburb about an hour and a half outside of Chicago, IL. However, I have lived in both Dallas and Houston, TX too. I have three siblings and they are all older than me (pictured below). I also have a dog named Daisy pictured below!

1. Honestly this is kind of a hard question for me to answer. I listen to a lot of different things depending on how I am feeling. Sometimes it is country, pop, rap, christian, upbeat, or kind of slow. Therefore, it was hard for me to just pick one song that I like. After some thought, I picked this song. It is called “Villain” by Lily Rose. She is technically a country singer, but honestly this song is not too country specific. It is linked below. This song is one that I play and just sing. It is slow but also picks up at some points, which is why I like it the most. It is also really easy to sing too which makes it even better! I also like the message she spreads with this song. The message she spreads is how every day she gets up and chooses the high road even though it is hard sometimes. This song is kind of a mix of both country and pop, which I think is a big part of why I like it so much.

2. A song that has been very meaningful to me is “Oceans” by Hillsong United. I was raised in a Catholic family, and have always been taught that my faith is really important. When I was younger I really did not understand that, but as I have gotten older, I have understood my faith a little better. This song is kind of what made me realize it. I heard it at a really hard time in my life, and it is the song that helped me get my life back together. I love all of the different tempos in the song and how it is upbeat but also very calming. Every time I listen to it I am able to breathe and relax. It kind of mentally resets me and then I can continue on. I hope you enjoy it!

3. One song that really does not connect with me is “Hello” by Adele. As I have said earlier, my music taste is very different and encompasses a lot of different kinds of music. However, this song, I just cannot connect with. I think it may be because it is a little repetitive, but mostly it is really slow and a depressing tone. I appreciate music that is a little bit more positive and upbeat because I like to improve my mood while listening to music.

  1. I have noticed a pattern between a lot of the people I have viewed the blogs of, that being the attraction to softer, calming music. It wouldn't be a go for me on an everyday basis but I could see myself listening to a slower song after a long day, especially at college.

  2. Nice dog! I listened to the song Villian you added and its a pretty good song. Thats not really the type of music I like but I found that song to be soothing and calming.

  3. I remember in like 7th grade when "Hello" first came out and everybody was singing it and it got so old so fast. I liked it for a little while but it got so overplayed and I constantly heard it so now I don't really like it anymore either.
